Background
The USAID Focus Region Health Project (FRHP) is a Cooperative Agreement that is contributing to USAID/Ghana's Strategic Objective Seven: Improved health status for Ghanaians. The duration of this project is from Sept 2009 to Feb 2014 and is designed to support the Ghana Health Services (GHS) to strengthen access to and quality of services, especially for maternal, newborn, and child health, family planning, malaria and HIV prevention, care and treatment in the Central, Western and Greater Accra regions, as well as to strengthen the health systems themselves. For HIV services, the project's assistance extends to the Ashanti and Eastern regions and began in the second year of project implementation.
Purpose
FRHP is scheduled to end in February 2014 and is now beginning the process of documenting and sharing its innovative approaches, results and lessons learned through a range of communication products which include assessment reports, technical briefs, success stories and a final project report. FRHP is thus seeking a consultant to provide overall support in creating, developing, editing and finalizing several of the communication products mentioned above.
Time Frame
The broad time frame for this consultancy is between August and October 2013.
Level of Effort (Estimate)
A total of 33 - 41 days, including 4 days for travel to Accra. The final level of effort may vary slightly depending on availability of the consultant, the project priorities and the resources available.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- The consultant is required to travel to and be present in Accra, Ghana, for an extended period of time, to work from the project office in Accra and complete all deliverables prior to departure from Accra.
- Review the past materials and reports related to FRHP and develop an understanding and familiarity with FRHP goals, objectives, activities and achievements from the beginning of the project. Meet with the various project staff in Accra. This is in preparation for tasks 3, 4 % 5 below. (3-4 days)
- Prepare and finalize new technical briefs pertaining to FRHP work on Leadership Development Program and Financial Management in consultation with concerned project staff. (4-6 days)
- To edit and/or rewrite existing draft Family Planning and Malaria in consultation with concerned project staff (4 days).
- Discuss and formulate an outline for the project Final Report and complete a first draft report of activities up the time of the (10-14 days)
- If time and resources permit, revise and finalize 6-8 success stories, from existing success stories into a single booklet with proper introduction that lays the context for the different success stories. (8-10 days)
Deliverables
A total of 4 Technical Briefs (Leadership Development Program, Financial Management, Family Planning & Malaria) completed and ready for submission to JSI communications team for final formatting, editing and marking and branding. These products should be delivered in a staggered manner so that JSI communications team can work with the consultant to prepare these products for publication.
An outline for the Final Project Report by day 15 and an interim draft Final Project Report.
Revised success stories' booklet.
QUALIFICATIONS
- English native speaker with experience in writing reports for health projects.
- Past experience in writing and preparing different types of documents such as project reports, study reports, progress/annual reports, technical briefs, case studies and success stories involving both quantitative and qualitative information is desired.
- Skills and abilities in document formatting and inserting pictures or tables/charts would be an added advantage.
- Able and willing to travel to Ghana for a period of 6-8 weeks and able to communicate and work in a foreign country and environment. Familiarity with public health issues globally and in the African context would be an added attraction.
Salary commensurate with experience.
