Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), is an international non-profit research organization. Based in New Haven, CT, with offices in Washington, D.C. and worldwide, IPA works with development partners and academic researchers to create and evaluate approaches to solving development problems, to communicate 'what works' in development and to scale up successful projects in a variety of fields, including health, education, microfinance, governance and agriculture.
Position Summary:
Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) seeks a qualified applicant for the position of Project Coordinator for the project Economic and Financial Models for Pricing and Setting Sanitation Tariffs for the Benefit of the Urban Poor. This project will design and evaluate alternative pricing structures in the market for sanitation services in urban West Africa. The principal investigators are Terence Johnson (University of Notre Dame) and Molly Lipscomb (University of Virginia).
The Project Coordinator position offers the opportunity to manage a large-scale field experiment in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research. Key areas of involvement will include: designing survey questionnaires, running pilot studies, managing survey teams, cleaning and analyzing data, assisting in the writing of project reports, and coordinating with key government and NGO partners. This position is located in Accra, Ghana.
Responsibilities:
The Project Coordinator will work closely with academic researchers and other field staff, and will collaborate with the Project Coordinator for a similar project based in Burkina Faso, and the Research Manager located in Washington, DC. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Implementing Computer Assisted Interviewing (CAI) for surveys;
- Hiring, training, and managing survey enumerators;
- Developing and piloting survey instruments; managing translation into local languages;
- Managing the logistics of a large-scale field experiment, including managing budgets, timelines, contract worker payroll, and procurement;
- Managing data entry and assisting in data cleaning and analysis;
- Ensuring adherence to data quality protocols, including auditing enumerators, monitoring data collection, and conducting data quality audits;
- Managing critical high-level relationships with Water and Sanitation for Africa and Municipal Government authorities;
- Participating in meetings with key stakeholders and presenting research findings;
- Writing reports detailing research findings and proposed interventions;
- Overseeing funding and human subjects approval applications, and ensuring that all necessary approvals are in place; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in economics, social sciences, public policy, or related fields. A master's degree is a plus
- Excellent management and organizational skills along with strong quantitative skills
- Experience living in a developing country, notably in West Africa, is a strong plus
- Fluency in English with strong communication skills
- Knowledge of Stata (strongly preferred) or other data analysis software is preferred
- Familiarity with randomized controlled trials preferred
- Demonstrated ability to manage enumerator teams and survey operations at different levels (programming and data flow, financial budgeting and reporting, human resources and team building)
- Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and team player
- Demonstrated ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organizations
